The start buoy. |
On Saturday, October 1, the team traveled north by bus to Lake Travis to attend the ASA Open Water Swimming Collegiate National Championships. We were blessed with a beautiful sunny day and calm water - the 5K race went well and we had all sorts of fun (presuming you love swimming long straight-a-way courses with no lane lines)!
The Lady Tigers bring home the overall championship. |
On the women's side of the competition, Texas A&M and Rice took the top four individual places. A&M's Cammile Adams was the 2011 winner clocking 1:02:46. Much to our suprise, team depth played in our favor and when the final points were tallied, Trinity ended up with 216 points to Texas A&M's 145 points. Savannah College of Art & Design finished 3rd with 74 points.
Sophomore Melanie Gustafson was the first Tiger to get home, clocking 1:10:56. First-years Sarah Miller and Rachel Hure were the next two Tigers to complete the 5K, with TU taking 11 of the top 21 places.
Alex! |
Senior Alex miranda was the first TU swimmer to complete the men's race, finishing 3rd behind Alexander Grandine of SCAD and Taylor Smith of Ohio Wesleyan. The Savannah collegian, who hails from Australia, finished with a time of 58:48.4. Sophomore Arthur Daigh and senior Matt Wey were 4th and 5th, helping to lead Trinity to its third consecutive men's team victory. The Tigers scored 128 points, followed by Savannah College of Art and Design and Ohio Wesleyan. TU had 13 atheletes finish among the top 18 men, that being the key to the team win.
